Swedish CV Guide: Photo, Personbevis & Local Conventions (2026)

Swedish CVs follow different rules than German, French or American resumes. Here's what to include, what to leave out, and what a personbevis actually is.

Why Swedish CV Norms Trip Up International Applicants

If you learned to write a CV in Germany, France, the Middle East or much of Asia, your instincts will mislead you in Sweden. Photos, birth dates, marital status, full ID numbers — normal elsewhere, red flags here. Sweden's working culture is built around lagom (moderation) and strong anti-discrimination practice, and CVs reflect that: short, factual, and stripped of personal details that could bias a recruiter.

No Photo — Sweden Is Stricter Than You Think

In Germany and France a professional headshot is still common. In Sweden the norm has moved firmly the other way, closer to (and arguably stricter than) US practice:

  • Most Swedish recruiters prefer CVs without a photo.
  • Larger employers and public agencies increasingly use anonymized recruitment — a photo works against you there.
  • A photo adds bias risk and zero information about your competence.

If your CV template has a photo slot, remove it for Swedish applications. (Aria's CV Studio warns you when a photo is enabled for this reason.)

Personbevis: What It Is and When Employers Ask for It

A personbevis (population registration extract) is an official document from Skatteverket, the Swedish Tax Agency, confirming what's in the population register: name, personnummer, registered address, and sometimes civil status or citizenship.

When you will be asked for one

  • Public-sector and security-classed jobs — police, defence, some healthcare and government roles.
  • Right-to-work verification — some employers request it at contract signing, especially for non-EU citizens alongside a residence permit.
  • Background-check processes — occasionally requested together with a criminal record extract (utdrag ur belastningsregistret).

When you should NOT send it

Never attach a personbevis to a regular application. It contains your full personnummer and address — exactly the data that shouldn't circulate in recruiting inboxes. Wait until an employer explicitly asks, and confirm which variant they need (Skatteverket issues several, e.g. "Utdrag om folkbokföringsuppgifter"). Ordering one is free and takes minutes at skatteverket.se — it arrives digitally or by post to your registered address.

Personal Details: Less Is More

Include only:

  • Name, phone, email
  • City (not full street address)
  • LinkedIn or portfolio link
  • Körkort (driving licence) — only if the job requires it; many Swedish job ads state "B-körkort krävs"

Leave out: personnummer, date of birth, marital status, nationality, religion, and photo.

Structure Swedish Recruiters Expect

  1. Kontaktuppgifter — contact details (minimal, as above)
  2. Profil — 2–4 line summary aimed at the specific role
  3. Arbetslivserfarenhet — work experience, reverse chronological, results over duties
  4. Utbildning — education
  5. Kompetenser & språk — skills and languages; always state your Swedish and English levels
  6. Referenser — "lämnas på begäran" (on request), or omit the section

Keep it to 1–2 pages. Understatement beats self-promotion — Swedish recruiters read "delivered X, grew Y by Z%" better than "visionary leader." Apply in Swedish when the ad is in Swedish, in English when the ad is in English.
